Media Kite was a game company once headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, that mainly released budget versions of computer and video game software. For many gaming fans, it was popular for its affordable pricing, making games more accessible. While budget versions are often perceived as lower quality, Media Kite offered products with excellent cost performance.
One of Media Kite's standout projects was the service “Net Gēsen.”This project was a revolutionary idea at the time, offering popular arcade games from the 1980s and 90s via the internet.Announced in 2002, it was set to distribute titles from well-known manufacturers like Taito, Sunsoft, and Nichibutsu.
Media Kite faced a major turning point in 2007.
In July of that year, it changed its name to CIS Corporation and transferred part of its operations to a related company, but the following month, the Tokyo District Court initiated bankruptcy proceedings. The total debt amounted to approximately 2.636 billion yen, marking the end of its long-standing presence in the gaming industry.
Media Kite's games and software still remain nostalgic memories for many fans today.Their contribution to the spread of budget software was not just from an economic perspective but was likely rooted in the desire to let more people enjoy games.
Although Media Kite met a sad end, its innovation and bold ideas, such as the “Net Gēsen” service, still point to new possibilities for growth in the gaming industry today.
