Right Stuff was a Japanese game development company once based in Tokyo, known for its uniqueness and tumultuous history. The company holds stories that capture the hearts of game fans, and its legacy is still remembered today.
The story of Right Stuff begins when staff from Glodia joined Pandora Box, led by its president, Takeo Iijima.Initially, Pandora Box and Right Stuff had a relationship where they split responsibilities, with Pandora Box handling planning and development, and Right Stuff handling sales. This innovative division of roles gave the company a unique start from its inception.
Right Stuff planned to launch with the PC-98 RPG “Alshark” in January 1991.However, just before its release, internal circumstances changed drastically. Issues such as unclear expenses, business expansion, and conflicts among staff surfaced, leading to the dissolution of the partnership with Pandora Box.Amidst this turmoil, President Iijima resigned, and the development team for “Alshark” transferred to Right Stuff.Overcoming these difficulties, the game was finally released in May of the same year. This story resonates as a symbol of creative passion and a spirit that refuses to be defeated by adversity.
One of Right Stuff's signature works is “The Fang of Alnam: Legend of the Twelve Beast Apostles.”Released for the PC Engine, this RPG was highly praised for Right Stuff's unique world-building and meticulous storytelling. This work proved the company's high creative capability and its ability to produce original stories.
The sequel to “The Fang of Alnam” attracted attention from the outset. However, due to development delays, the genre was changed to adventure, and it was released as a port for the PlayStation. The sequel, “The Wing of Alnam: Beyond the Burned Sky,” also showcased Right Stuff's ambition, but it did not achieve commercial success.
In 1999, after facing numerous trials and challenges, Right Stuff ultimately closed down and was liquidated. However, the innovation and unique storytelling it displayed in its short period brought a fresh breeze to the game industry at the time.Right Stuff's works rekindled creative ambition across the industry and continue to be loved by many game fans today.
Although Right Stuff disbanded after only a few years, its existence remains a symbol in the gaming industry. This company, with its fearless creative spirit, resilience against adversity, and passion for games, remains etched in the hearts of many.
