[RandnetDD] Nintendo's Bold Venture! The History of RandnetDD, Founded to Operate the Network Service “Randnet”!
RandnetDD Co., Ltd. was established in 1999 as a joint venture between Nintendo and Recruit. This company aimed to offer a groundbreaking networked gaming experience for its time, paving the way for a new chapter in the gaming industry. Behind this initiative lay a grand vision and challenge focused on the future of games and digital entertainment.
RandnetDD's mission was to operate “Randnet,” a membership-based network service using the 64DD, an expansion accessory for the Nintendo 64. Through this service, players could not only enjoy games but also experience new forms of interaction and engagement via the network. This venture can be considered one of the foundations of today’s online gaming culture.
The establishment of this project was heavily influenced by Satoru Kayama, who at the time was the President of Marigul Management and an Executive Director at Media Factory. With extensive experience in the broader media industry beyond gaming, Kayama supported RandnetDD's foundation and championed the new challenge of merging games with network connectivity.
Membership recruitment began in November 1999, with a limited cap of 100,000 members, increasing the anticipation for this exclusive experience. The application process was also unique for the time, involving obtaining forms through electronics stores or call centers, adding to its premium feel. The service officially launched in February 2000, delivering a new experience to dedicated gaming fans.
Just a year after its launch, the Randnet service came to an end on February 28, 2001. Consequently, RandnetDD was dissolved, and detailed information on the liquidation or financial losses was never publicly disclosed. However, despite its short lifespan, its effort to explore the potential of games and network services remains a significant story to this day.
Masanori Tanaka, who served as the President of RandnetDD, later returned to Recruit, where he became President of Recruit Staffing Information Services. In 2010, he was appointed President of Hakuten Corporation. His career, spanning beyond the gaming industry, symbolizes continual growth and ambition.
Although RandnetDD was active for only two years, its impact was by no means small. By exploring the possibilities of networked gaming, it pioneered a path that would later evolve into today’s online gaming culture. Its spirit of innovation and challenge will continue to be remembered in the gaming industry.
