【Warp】Best Known for D no Shokutaku! What Kind of Game Company Was the Former Developer Warp?
Gamers might have heard the name “Warp” at least once. Known for its unique game development, Warp left a lasting impression on the Japanese gaming industry, despite its short-lived existence. Today, let’s explore the charm, characteristics, and history of this remarkable game company.
In 1989, game creator Kenji Eno founded EIM Ltd., developing software for the Famicom. However, dissatisfied with creating sequels and character-based games, he sought new challenges. In 1994, he established “Warp” in Ebisu, Shibuya. The company's style was akin to indie games—free and experimental. As Eno famously said, “A company is like a band,” Warp became a space for a small team to craft innovative gaming experiences.
Warp's signature works include *D no Shokutaku* and *Enemy Zero*. These were not just games but incorporated elements of “interactive cinema,” much like movies. Warp pushed boundaries further with *Real Sound: Kaze no Regret*, a groundbreaking attempt to tell a story solely through sound, eliminating visuals entirely. This innovation astonished many players.
In 1996, *Enemy Zero* was prominently announced at the PlayStation Expo. However, in an unprecedented move during the event, it was suddenly declared that the game would release on Sega Saturn instead. Attendees, who could only try the demo on PlayStation, were left in a state of utter confusion—an act that showcased Kenji Eno’s characteristic boldness.
In 1997, Warp moved its office to Kita-Aoyama. This was no ordinary workplace; the building featured a Japanese garden complete with bamboo groves and a shishi-odoshi fountain, surprising all who visited. It seems Eno valued not just making games but also creating an atmosphere and experience imbued with playfulness.
In 1998, Warp's activities were compiled into a book. It detailed the life stories and work passions of each employee, influencing not just game fans but also many aspiring to creative professions. This initiative was yet another uniquely Warp-like endeavor.
Warp’s logo tells a story akin to a four-panel comic: starting with a TV color bar, followed by static, the beginning of a game, and finally turning off the power out of boredom. This design embodies Warp’s philosophy of breaking monotony through gaming and delivering new experiences.
In 2000, the company rebranded itself as “Super Warp” and shifted from gaming to network services. Even then, Kenji Eno’s spirit of “Warp” continued to inspire many creators.
Warp, while a game company, showcased creativity that transcended gaming itself. Within its short history, Warp consistently transformed innovative ideas and bold challenges into reality. Its story evokes a sense of “creative freedom” that goes beyond gaming.
The dreams Kenji Eno and Warp showed us still live on in the hearts of many.
