【THQ Japan】A Once-Dissolved Game Company Revives as a Brand! What is THQ (Japan), Expanding Globally?

THQ originally started as a toy manufacturer. The company name “THQ” stands for “Toy Headquarters,” and it initially thrived in the toy industry. However, in 1994, it fully transitioned into the gaming industry, later creating numerous titles beloved by gamers worldwide.
THQ made a full-scale entry into the Japanese market in 2006, with the game adaptation of the movie Cars as its first step. While THQ globally focused on multi-platform releases, its Japanese branch, THQ Japan, adopted strategies tailored to the local market. From de Blob (2008) onward, it partnered with companies like Spike and Konami to localize titles specifically for Japan. In 2011, THQ resumed self-publishing in Japan with Saints Row: The Third, further strengthening its presence.
THQ saw initial success with the uDraw GameTablet for the Wii. However, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, released the following year, failed disastrously, leaving the company with a staggering 1.4 million unsold units. This financial blow led to THQ’s bankruptcy in December 2012. THQ Japan closed its office in February 2012, yet remarkably, it withdrew from the market while still maintaining profitability.
Even after THQ's dissolution, its legacy lived on. Popular franchises like Darksiders and Red Faction were acquired by other companies. In 2014, Nordic Games purchased the THQ brand, and in 2016, it rebranded itself as “THQ Nordic,” reestablishing its presence in the gaming industry.
THQ Japan’s greatest strength was its unique strategy tailored to the Japanese market. Instead of simply importing overseas titles, it made efforts to adapt them for Japanese audiences. Furthermore, among THQ's branches, THQ Japan was notably stable in its management, proving its competency despite its short lifespan in the industry.
The name “THQ” hasn’t disappeared. Reborn as THQ Nordic, it continues to bring excitement to gamers worldwide. Perhaps one day, a new challenger will emerge, inheriting the spirit of THQ Japan.
