Out of the blue, have you ever heard of “AlphaUnit”?
Even for gaming enthusiasts, it might sound a bit obscure.
In fact, this company was a game developer based in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, and worked on quite unique titles for Nintendo platforms like the Nintendo DS and Wii.
However, around 2021, the company ceased its operations and has since become known only to those in the know.
But if you trace its footsteps, you'll find that it created many quirky and interesting games.
First, let's focus on a Game Boy Color-era title: “Bakkyuu Renpatsu!! Super B-Daman: Birth! Rising Valkyrie!!”.
If you thought, “What a long title!” — you're absolutely right (lol).
But it was irresistible for kids at the time.
The game was based on the marble-shooting toy “B-Daman” and packed with battle and customization elements.
Even playing it now, it has an oddly addictive charm.
AlphaUnit’s true forte was definitely during the Nintendo DS era.
“Chubo Desu Yo! Master Chef Recipe Collection” was a game based on that famous cooking show.
Who would’ve thought you could recreate master chef recipes in a game...... and it was full of little touches that fans of the show would appreciate.
Then there’s the educational title “eco Kentei DS”, which let you learn about environmental issues through quizzes — and it was even supervised by the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry!
It’s surprising just how serious they were about it.
If you love rhythm games, check out “Rhythm DE Run♪ Run♪ Run♪”.
Just like the name suggests, it’s a rhythm game where you run along to pop music.
It’s got an addictive kind of fun.
There’s also “Negotiator DS,” a negotiation adventure game with a bit of a mystery vibe.
The tension was like something out of a drama, and it was impressive how it was conveyed through the touch pen.
On the DSi, they released an advanced AR title called “Monster Finder”.
For its time, it was a very novel attempt, letting you experience monsters appearing in the real world.
Their activity continued on the Wii, with “Batting Revolution” being a must-see for pro baseball fans.
It was officially endorsed by Nippon Professional Baseball and let you enjoy real batting action using the Wii Remote like a bat.
They also released party games like “Darts Wii DX,” and many of their titles were perfect for lively fun with friends and family.
The last game believed to be developed by AlphaUnit was the Nintendo Switch title “Whip! Whip!”.
It’s a pixel-art action game with an indie feel and a style that evokes a sense of nostalgia.
The thrill of defeating enemies with a whip and the intricately designed stages are its main appeal.
It may look simple at first glance, but it’s the type that grows on you.
It might just be the perfect hidden gem to mark AlphaUnit’s finale.
They may not have had flashy marketing.
But AlphaUnit’s games always had a “slightly different perspective” or “nerd-pleasing ideas” that made them irresistibly charming.
Although the company is no longer active, their games are still available today.
Searching in secondhand game shops or online can feel like a bit of a treasure hunt.
If you ever feel like digging up “weird” or “fun” games, be sure to remember AlphaUnit’s works.
All the above titles in one place! From retro to modern — here’s AlphaUnit’s full lineup!
