[Global・A・Entertainment] — Also known as GAE! Now focused on social and smartphone games, here’s a look back at the titles once released by Global・A・Entertainment!
Hearing the name “Global・A・Entertainment,” you might think it’s a foreign studio. But in fact, this company is a legitimate Japanese game developer that was founded in 1997 in Kichijoji, Tokyo. While their headquarters are now in Shimbashi, their original choice of the artistic Kichijoji area hints at a unique creative spirit. Today, they go by “GAE” (Global Asobi Entertainment), which gives off a lighter, more approachable vibe.
Looking through GAE’s game catalog, one thing becomes clear: they don’t like to stick to templates. A standout example is the Akudaikan series, which explores the underbelly of Edo-era Japan. The unique concept of playing from the “evil” side was a bold departure that shocked many players. Then there’s “Oookuki”, a game with such an eccentric experience it’s often labeled a “meme game.” For better or worse, their “all-in” approach marks them as outliers in a commercial-driven industry—and that’s exactly what defines GAE’s unique identity.
While they may seem to specialize in historical themes, GAE’s genre range is impressively broad. Their releases span from games aimed at young girls to sound novels, survival games, shooters, and even mahjong—like a department store for video games. They also contributed to Suikoden on the PSP under Konami, proving their technical chops. One particularly memorable title is “The World Revolves Around Me”, a selfish-princess RPG that lived up to its bold name with a truly unique gameplay experience.
In 2009, the company officially rebranded as “GAE,” short for Global Asobi Entertainment. From that point, they began shifting beyond traditional boxed games and into newer spaces like mobile and social gaming. Their proactive push into smartphone-based free-to-play games shows how flexibly they’ve adapted to a changing market—truly a model of business survival.
In 2015, they entered a capital partnership with Chinese IT giant Talkweb, expanding their focus to international markets. It was then that their original vision of being “Global” finally started to come to fruition.
