The Story of Demons Unleashed by Atlus, Here's What Devil Summoner is All About!

If the words “demon summoning” evoke a dark and thrilling sound, your sensibility is sharp. “Devil Summoner” is a side story to the popular RPG “Shin Megami Tensei” series by Atlus, yet its world view and narrative depth exude a charm no less than the main series. The setting is 199X—however, the world doesn't collapse like in the main SMT series; instead, a world where “demon-related incidents” secretly unfold without public knowledge. The protagonist, as a “Devil Summoner” with the power to command demons, steps into the bizarre mysteries swirling in the city.

The first installment in the series truly emanates a “hard-boiled” scent. A profound and somber atmosphere, as if enveloped in cigarette smoke and neon lights, permeates the entire game, and players are not only fighting demons but also touching upon the darkness in the human heart and the underbelly of society. The second installment, in contrast, shifts to a story that merges youth and mystery as boys become embroiled in incidents, yet the underlying philosophical theme of “depicting the relationship between humans and demons” remains. The series' true essence lies in its consistent focus on “human drama,” even as it changes its face with each title.
The combat system, while being the legitimate evolution of “Shin Megami Tensei II” and “if......”, features various enhancements and changes depending on the title, resulting in a composition that keeps players engaged. Particularly in “Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner” and “Soul Hackers,” the negotiation and fusion with demons dramatically increase strategic depth and collectability. In the “Goumaden” (Fusion Chamber), the setting for demon fusion, a shady yet endearing man named Victor supports your summoner life. Furthermore, subtle details, such as the unique interpunct in magic names like “Maha・Ragidain,” are exquisite and irresistible to fans. This sense of immersion as a “Summoner” is a unique pleasure of this series.
In the third and fourth installments of the series, the setting takes on a stronger legendary/folklore color, shifting to a development akin to an “exorcist.” Rather than simply demon slaying, there is a sensation of stepping into a Japanese-style eerie tale or urban legend. The fifth installment returns to a more modern atmosphere, creating a unique ambiance where technology and the occult intersect. The ability to change with the times and themes, constantly providing fresh stimulation, can be said to be the greatest strength of the “Devil Summoner” series.
This series shares the same world view as “Shin Megami Tensei” but is a “parallel world” where the history of the story diverged. A world where the Great Destruction of Tokyo did not occur, and the extraordinary is lurking within the ordinary—that is the world of “Devil Summoner.” It is precisely for this reason that a more realistic, more human-centric drama is portrayed, deeply moving the player's heart. In fact, the first installment was even adapted into a live-action drama produced by Tsuburaya Productions, and its influence has expanded the fanbase broadly, not just limited to a niche of enthusiasts.
“Devil Summoner” is not just an RPG where you use demons. It is a “story,” a “question,” and sometimes even a “salvation” that exposes the truth hidden in the city's darkness and touches the depths of the human heart. If you have not yet experienced this series, please open its door just once. Surely, the inherent quality of a “Summoner” sleeping within you will quietly awaken.
