The slapstick delivery × RPG, Calamity Angels: Special Delivery, is now on sale!
Deliver! Battle! Calamity Angels might look like just a slapstick RPG at first glance. However, its true nature is a grand, hilarious, and moving adventure of lovable troublemakers who are completely dedicated to “delivering feelings.” The setting is a world teeming with monsters. It's the story of Yuuri, a rookie leader belonging to a delivery guild, who struggles with a group of half-baked companions to deliver packages—that is, “someone's feelings”—through these dangerous zones. Already at this point, the atmosphere is a little different from a regular RPG, right? But the real fun starts here.
The biggest feature of this game, above all else, is the “companions who won't listen.” Yes, they completely ignore your instructions during battle and move on their own whenever the mood strikes them. Sometimes this turns into something funny, and other times it leads to an unexpected major crisis. But that is the real pleasure of this game, where the slapstick chaos created by the companions turns a mere battle into a drama. While being tossed about by battles with no predictable rhythm, there's a mysterious charm where you somehow start to love their “unmanageability.” Miracles happen with skill combinations, or conversely, they panic after making a terrible mistake—that roller coaster of emotions is the true essence of this game.
Another interesting feature is that map movement is done via a roulette system. Since events and battles occur depending on the space you land on, both strategy and luck are tested. Whether to rush straight to the destination or take a slightly longer but safer route—each choice creates a dramatic outcome. Landing on a recovery space at the last moment or accidentally getting caught in a chain of trouble creates an exquisite tension that makes you want to play again and again. The unfolding adventure, woven from the player's decisions and chance, will truly let you feel the weight and excitement of “delivery.”
The character designer is Kei Nanameda, known for Mary Skelter: Nightmares and Death end re;Quest. The visuals he creates are simply striking, and every character leaves a strong impression from the very first sight. Despite their outwardly pop appearance, the background and feelings of each character are properly depicted, and you'll surely find yourself wanting to root for one of them before you know it. They are somewhat eccentric, yet desperately earnest, and their full-throttle rush through both comedy and serious moments is accompanied by laughter and even unexpected emotion.
