The setting is “a world where the memories of the dead remain.” Somewhere nostalgic, yet endlessly sorrowful—against the backdrop of such a twilight space, the story of boys and girls confronting cursed souls unfolds. 'Hanataba o Kimi ni Okurou (I'll Give You a Bouquet)' is not just a romance adventure. Here, the darkness and pain of the human heart, taking the form of “curses,” and the struggles and growth of the “curse exorcists” who banish them, are depicted, masterfully elevating a quiet, profound theme into entertainment.
The scenario is handled by Yukito Urushibara, known for works like 'Irotoridori no Sekai' and 'Sakura, Moyu.' His subtle and profound psychological descriptions, flowing expression of scenes, and compositional strength in finding hope amidst suffering are truly present. Although it's a massive volume with over 800,000 characters, every single sentence hits the heart without waste, and there are moments when even a single word from a character tugs at your chest. I feel like it's been a long time since I've encountered a work that offers such an immersive experience that you look up and realize the night is far gone.
Another pillar of this work is the visuals by illustrator Saine. The characters, who convey kindness and warmth amidst their brilliance, are so expressive they seem to speak of their emotions, sometimes conveying the stirrings of the heart more eloquently than words. In every moment they shed tears, every scene they show anger, and every cut where they smile, the player will surely be drawn in by their emotions and be unable to take their eyes off the screen.
What sets “Hanataba o Kimi ni Okurou” apart from many visual novels is that it confronts “pain” head-on, yet still believes in “the heart that cares for others.” The existence of curses is something born from the sorrow and anger people harbor. That is why the act of exorcising them holds a deeper meaning than mere combat. Overcoming hatred, understanding, and forgiving one another—that process is depicted carefully and beautifully in this game.
As the story progresses and the characters' pasts and feelings are revealed, you surely won't be able to help but empathize with them. The quality as a visual novel is extremely high, possessing a depth that doesn't let the experience end with just reading. The complexity of the human heart, and the warmth of still caring for others. After finishing this work, you will surely be left with a quiet emotion, a feeling that makes you “want to give someone a bouquet.”
