Tamsoft is a game development company headquartered in Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo. It was established on June 26, 1992. As a regular member of the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association, it has been active at the forefront of the industry for many years. Its primary business is contract development, planning and producing numerous titles at the request of domestic and international makers. While they are, so to speak, an ”unsung hero,” their talent certainly doesn't stop behind the scenes. As symbolized by their motto, ”Going a bit too far is just right,” their commitment to extreme expression and character visuals gives their works a unique level of passion.
In the 1990s, Tamsoft handled many of Takara's popular titles. For example, they were involved in the development of the Battle Arena Toshinden series and the Choro Q series, accumulating experience in a wide range of genres such as action, fighting, and racing. In 1998, they released their first self-published work, Knight & Baby, taking a new step by planning and releasing a game on their own. The technical prowess and flexibility cultivated during this period became the foundation for their diverse future developments.
In the early 2000s, because they developed many of D3PUBLISHER's SIMPLE series, Tamsoft was sometimes perceived as a ”low-price title company.” However, they were not a company that would fit inside that box. Onee Chanbara, born around the same time, became a series as a full-price work and established a unique position. What’s noteworthy here isn't just the change in price range, but the shift towards a stance of ”putting their own colors at the forefront.” Using unique characters and bold action as their weapons, they rewrote their brand image.
Since 2010, Tamsoft has strengthened its presence even further. They were in charge of planning and developing the Dream Club series and the Senran Kagura series, boosting them into popular franchises. They also became involved in the development of spin-offs for existing IPs like Neptunia and Utawarerumono, demonstrating their skill in adding new charm while respecting the worldviews of other companies. Furthermore, they handled major titles such as Gintama Rumble and Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, creating works that met the expectations of original fans.
The true essence of Tamsoft is surely their passion for character expression. In terms of visuals, movement, and direction, there is a level of passion in everything that makes you think, ”They went this far?” Even in contract development, the ”Tamsoft-ness” always seeps through somewhere. The reason for this likely lies in their attitude of not just shaping a given project, but layering their own colors onto it.
Even if their name doesn't often appear at the forefront of the stage, Tamsoft has supported numerous hits from the shadows. While updating their technology to match the flow of the times, their stance of sticking to the spirit of ”Going a bit too far is just right” remains unchanged. If you have ever felt that ”this game is strangely intense for some reason,” the name Tamsoft might be behind it.
