“Romancing SaGa 2,” which recorded a million-seller in 1993, has finally received a full remake. This isn't just a remaster. The graphics have been completely converted to 3D, and the battle and growth systems have been reconstructed for the modern era. It’s a serious rebirth that doesn't just end with “nostalgia.” For those who played it to death on the Super Famicom, there is the joy of reunion; for those experiencing it for the first time, the finish is such that it can be accepted as a high-quality new RPG.
At the center of the story are the Seven Heroes, who once saved the world only to be exiled to another dimension. Returning after thousands of years, are they saviors or a calamity? That question pierces through the entire story. The player becomes the Emperor of the Empire, confronting them while weaving history. It's not just a simple story of good vs. evil; the tale lying between the gap of legend and reality, and between people's memories and the truth, approaches quietly but with undeniable weight.
What makes this work unique is the “Imperial Succession” system. Even if you are defeated by a powerful foe or the eras change, the battle does not end. By passing down abilities and techniques to the next generation, the Empire survives and continues its confrontation with the Seven Heroes. The sensation that “the Emperor I raised becomes a part of history” is something rarely experienced in other RPGs. The structure, where the player personally experiences thousands of years of time, gives the story an overwhelming scale.
Which regions to suppress and which of the Seven Heroes to challenge—even the order is left to the player. Thanks to the Free Scenario system, progression is not a straight line. Developments change based on choices, and one event can bring about a different future. Even the time spent gazing at the map wondering “where to go next” is part of the enjoyment of this work. Rather than following a given story, the sense of building history yourself makes the play experience special.
In combat, the “Inspiration” and “Formations” that were popular in the original live on. Discovering a new technique in the heat of battle is a thrill no matter how many times you experience it. With the addition of Timeline Battles, action order is visualized, making strategic elements even clearer. Furthermore, new “United Attacks” have been introduced, creating moments where consecutive attacks between allies turn the tide of battle. It’s not a simple clash of stats; you can enjoy the depth of considering placement and order.
Characters have been converted to 3D while following the worldview of the original illustrator, Tomomi Kobayashi, and towns and dungeons have been reconstructed three-dimensionally. Familiar lands appear fresh, increasing the joy of exploration. Kenji Ito handled the musical arrangements, with a feature allowing players to switch between the new arrangements and the original versions. Additionally, events are now fully voiced, further heightening the story's realism. The seriousness of the remake is conveyed through both the eyes and ears.
There are three difficulty levels: Casual, Normal, and Original. The design accommodates a wide range of players, from those who want to focus on the story to veterans seeking the challenge of the original game. It’s a welcome point that even those who have memories of giving up in the past can try again with the new settings.
“Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven” is not mere nostalgia. It is a story of a will passed down through the ages, a future that changes through choices, and an Empire that rises again and again. It is an ambitious work that reconstructs all of that with modern technology. Which Emperor will you be, and which of the Seven Heroes will you challenge? The answer will be carved as your very own history.
