At the center of the story is a mysterious child calling himself ”Mamiya.” Set in Tokyo during the year the world is prophesied to end, this entity suddenly appears before the protagonists who were living their normal lives. At first, he seems like just a strange individual. However, as the story progresses, the meaning behind his existence gradually takes shape. Is he hope, or a symbol leading to destruction? By interacting with Mamiya, the characters step away from their daily routines bit by bit. Before long, their very worldview changes, and Mamiya becomes their source of emotional support. As a player, you will often find yourself wondering, ”Why are they so drawn to him?” and that sense of incongruity may be the very core of this work.
The brilliance of this game lies in the fact that it does not depict the potential end of the world as a grand panic or a heroic epic. ”MAMIYA - A Shared Illusion of the World's End - is composed of three arcs. By depicting the story from different perspectives and situations, events in the same world take on entirely different meanings. What were initially fragmentary incidents gain new significance when told from another point of view, and the player's understanding deepens bit by bit. Thanks to this structure, the story does not progress linearly; instead, it offers the enjoyment of collecting puzzle pieces. The way the characters' choices and fates overlap to eventually form a massive current is perfectly described as an ”interweaving of illusions and intentions.” While playing, you feel less like you are just reading a story and more like a detective uncovering the truth.
While the work originally received high acclaim on PC, the Nintendo Switch version adds new elements. Newly drawn stills color the story's striking scenes even more vividly, conveying the characters' emotions and the atmosphere more strongly.
