To those who think, “Weren't game companies established as corporations from the start?”, I want to share the unique origins of T&E SOFT. They didn't start as a large organization; their journey began with a program submitted to the PC magazine “I/O.” In other words, they were born in a creative environment so free it's hard to imagine today, where “something interesting made by someone” became a commercial product just as it was. Knowing this background, doesn't the handmade warmth and adventurous spirit found in T&E SOFT games make perfect sense?
By the way, did you know that the meaning of the company's name changed over time? Initially, it was a simple combination of the names of the founders, brothers Toshiro and Eiji Yokoyama. Later, it expanded to mean “Try & Exciting,” reflecting a spirit of challenge and fun, and eventually evolved into “Technology & Entertainment”—a concept that still resonates today. This evolution wasn't just wordplay; it seems to symbolize their constant quest to bridge the gap between technology and entertainment.
In the early 1980s, Japanese PC games were still in their infancy, and it was an era where no one knew what the “correct” answer was. In that environment, T&E SOFT made the bold move of supporting multiple platforms beyond just the PC-6001. With the hit release of “3D Golf Simulation” in 1983, the company's name became widely known almost overnight. Expressing “3D” with the technology of that time was no small feat, and the fact that they challenged themselves to make it a reality speaks volumes about the company's foresight and high level of technical skill.
We also cannot go without mentioning the numerous titles T&E SOFT produced. The “Hydlide” series, “The Legend of Star Arthur,” and “DAIVA” all left a powerful impression on players of that era. These weren't just games you played; they featured unique innovations in their world-building and systems that made you feel, “This game is different from the rest.” That “something” is the core of this company's creative charm and perhaps the reason why they don't feel dated even when looking back today.
Of course, T&E SOFT underwent many changes throughout its long history. In 2002, the company name was changed to D-Wanderland, and the T&E name was later carried on by different legal entities as the organization's form shifted significantly. Eventually, it came under the umbrella of Dwango and was reorganized into a development group within Spike Chunsoft. What's important to note here is that they didn't “disappear”—they italic “continued by changing shape.”} Even as the corporate structure changed, the cultivated technology and ideas have been firmly passed down to the next generation.
Looking back, it feels as though the charm of T&E SOFT cannot be measured solely by hit titles or fame. Rather, the true value lies in their attitude—starting from nearly zero and fearlessly challenging new expressions and technologies. They were an entity that believed in and shaped the possibilities of games back when they weren't yet established as a “culture.” If you love modern games, knowing the history of this company as one of the industry's roots might just change the way you see things.
