When hearing the name ”Digiturbo,” surprisingly few people might immediately answer, ”Oh, that’s a game company.” However, tracing its actual history reveals that its scope was far too broad to be contained by that single description. The company’s fascination lies in the fact that it handled not only game software but also video, music, and even character merchandise. Rather than confining itself to one genre, its attitude of ”making anything interesting” shone through, giving it the profile of what could be called a comprehensive entertainment company.
Founded in 1997 as a limited liability company, the firm was involved from a relatively early stage in the planning and development of the educational software ”Dekiru Gakushu Club Ken-Chako Daiboken.” What’s notable here is the effort to achieve both ”game-like fun” and ”educational utility” simultaneously, showing that they already possessed a perspective that went beyond mere entertainment production. Furthermore, since the software was released through another company, it becomes clear that they were the type of enterprise that demonstrated its planning and development prowess behind the scenes.
In 2000, they handled the design for Takara's ”e-kara,” and in 2002, they were involved in the planning and production of the children's website ”Kids goo,” showing a trend of leveraging their strength in how digital content is presented. This is an interesting point; they weren't just a company that made software, but were characteristically involved in ”how to deliver” and ”how to facilitate the experience.” Their emphasis on creativity with an awareness of the user interface is likely why they were able to participate in such diverse projects.
Broadening the scope further, they released the anti-virus software ”Virus Doctor” in 2003 and a music album by their exclusive singer Kanako Ito in 2004. Looking at this timeline, the genres are so diverse one might wonder, ”Is this really the same company?” but conversely, it shows how flexibly they responded to the needs of the times. One cannot overlook how they built a unique brand image by simultaneously handling seemingly different fields such as software development and music production.
In 2016, the company changed its name to ”Conteride Co., Ltd.” and moved into a new phase—an event that in itself felt very much like Digiturbo. Changing a corporate name is often more than just swapping a sign; it signifies a restructuring of direction and vision, and one can imagine there was always a ”will to look toward the next step” behind it. The stance of continuously choosing change over stability is a major strength in the creative industry.
Finally, in 2024, Conteride brought its history to a close by being absorbed and merged into Nitroplus along with other companies. Looking only at this event might make it feel like an ”end,” but in reality, it can be viewed as a ”transition to the next stage” where the know-how and creativity cultivated over the years are passed on to a larger organization. Even if its role as a single company has ended, the ideas and experiences born within it will surely be carried forward into the future.
