【Bethesda Softworks】Famous as a publisher of FPS/TPS games like ”The Elder Scrolls”, ”Fallout”, ”The Evil Within”, and ”Doom”! What is the history of Bethesda Softworks, a developer of diverse game genres!?
If asked, ”What kind of game company is Bethesda anyway?”, it might be surprisingly difficult to explain in a single word. Bethesda Softworks is a video game company founded in the United States on June 28, 1986, and has been involved in a wide range of titles from RPGs to racing, simulation, sports, FPS, and TPS. Among them, game lovers have probably heard the names of series such as ”The Elder Scrolls”, ”Fallout”, and ”Doom” at least once. Furthermore, they also handle titles like ”The Evil Within”, and the company's appeal lies in not being confined to a single frame of ”only being good at this genre”. It is not just about having a large number of titles. From walking around a desolate world to starting your own adventure in a land of swords and magic, to fighting enemies at a fierce pace, they have provided completely different experiences with each work. Yet, in drawing players into an intense worldview, there is a common charm shared among them.
Tracing the beginnings of such a Bethesda reveals a slightly unexpected side compared to the giant brand of today. The founder was Christopher Weaver. It was established in 1986 as a division of Media Technology Limited in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. The impressive company name ”Bethesda” actually originates from the name of the location where it was founded. Later, the headquarters relocated to Rockville in the same state. In the 1990s, they released DOS games into the world, including ”The Terminator” based on the movie ”The Terminator”, and ”The Elder Scrolls: Arena”, which would later grow into a representative series. Although the name now evokes epic game worlds, its history was built step by step while facing changes in the PC game market.
Of course, it was not smooth sailing. Experiencing slumps in sales and other challenges, ZeniMax Media was established in 1999 as a company to manage financial and legal affairs. From this point, Bethesda Softworks became a subsidiary of that company and mainly assumed the role of a publisher delivering games to the market. On the other hand, development functions were transferred to the newly established Bethesda Game Studios. If you have an image of ”games made by Bethesda”, it might feel a bit confusing, but the organization responsible for development and the organization responsible for publishing are separated. Furthermore, as ZeniMax Media brought companies and franchises under its umbrella, the lineup of titles delivered by Bethesda Softworks expanded as well. They became an entity connecting long-loved series to the next generation, including not only new releases but also ports of past titles such as ”Doom” and ”Fallout”.
So, what attracts players to Bethesda titles? Rather than ”being shown a story”, the sense of ”being thrown into that world” is perhaps a major charm. Especially in ”The Elder Scrolls” and ”Fallout”, there is the joy of deciding your own goals, taking detours, and assembling your adventure while encountering accidental events. On the other hand, there are also titles like ”Doom” that bring fast-paced combat to the forefront. Even though the ways to play and the settings are different, each title possesses a personality that makes you think, ”I want to spend countless hours in this world”. This wide breadth is surely a unique strength of Bethesda Softworks with its long history.
In 2020, a major turning point arrived that astonished the gaming industry. Microsoft entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media for 7.5 billion dollars, and Bethesda Softworks also came under its umbrella. As a result, ties with Xbox became even stronger, and different movements from before began to be seen regarding title rollouts to competing home video game consoles. However, expansions to other companies' hardware did not completely vanish, with examples like ”Hi-Fi Rush” where a PlayStation 5 version was released. In Japan, ZeniMax Asia K.K. was long responsible for software publishing, but the company closed in June 2024. After that, the system transitioned to Japan Microsoft handling sales.
Looking back at its nearly 40-year history, describing the charm of Bethesda Softworks simply as ”a company with many famous series” is not enough. Starting as a small division, while experiencing management difficulties and organizational restructuring, it delivered numerous titles to the world and eventually became one of the pillars supporting the gaming business of a massive IT corporation. Still, at the center are the many games that make players anticipate, ”What kind of world will they take me to next?”. Whether it is a fantasy land, a desolate future, or a hellish battlefield, it does not matter. Stepping into a world different from everyday life the moment you launch the game—sending out such experiences over decades is precisely why the name Bethesda Softworks continues to attract game fans.
