GAME GEAR is a handheld gaming console released by SEGA CORPORATION.
It was released in Japan in 1990 and internationally in 1991 and beyond. It is actually the first and last handheld gaming console released by SEGA CORPORATION.
The most distinctive feature of the GAME GEAR was its color LCD panel, capable of displaying up to 4096 colors simultaneously, which was called 'full color' at the time.
It was the first handheld console released in Japan to feature a color screen. Additionally, using its accessories, it could also function as a liquid-crystal color TV.
With a total of 14 million units sold worldwide, it was the most popular handheld console not manufactured by Nintendo, until the arrival of Sony's PlayStation Portable.
I see, it was released around the same time as the GAME BOY. I was probably too young at that time to know about GAME GEAR......
It's pretty amazing that a color game console was already available when the GAME BOY was out. However, being too cutting-edge had its drawbacks like difficult development, strong afterimages, and excessive battery consumption for the backlight and batteries. Yet, it's a famous hardware that many people still love today, including its software. Plus, it looks stylish and cool!
