Founded in 1973, it gained attention as a company started by a former professional boxer.
At the time, it was called 'Shin Nihon Kikaku,' and it entered the arcade game industry in the late 1970s.

From the 1990s onwards, they released the home gaming console NEOGEO with the slogan 'Take home incredible games (Bring the excitement of arcade games home).'

In addition to operating its own game centers and leisure facilities, as of February 2022, the Saudi Arabian investment firm Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC) has acquired SNK through a tender offer (TOB), bringing it under EGDC's umbrella.
