An aquarium usually evokes images of shimmering light on water, gently swimming fish, and a fantastical atmosphere that feels otherworldly. But what if that place turned into a *stage of fear*? *The Aquarium does not dance* is a horror adventure set in such quiet madness. Surprisingly, the developer has said they dislike horror, which may be why the scares are not excessive. Instead, the game focuses on subtle psychological pressure that tightens around your chest. Who would have thought an aquarium could be such an unsettling, claustrophobic space?
At the heart of the story is Suze, a girl wandering the aquarium in search of her best friend Lulu. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unique heroines. Among them, Retro—a woman in military uniform—leaves a particularly overwhelming impression, shifting the tone of the story dramatically upon her appearance. This is not mere horror meant to scare. Each character has motives, struggles, and emotions that intertwine, while the player’s choices determine how the story unfolds. The weight of deciding “who to trust” and “what to choose” builds slowly but surely as you explore, creating a tension that is irresistibly engaging.
Originally released as a free game in 2024, this title has undergone major upgrades for its Nintendo Switch release. The biggest highlight is that the five main heroines are now fully voiced, adding emotional depth and greatly enhancing immersion in the story. On top of that, a brand-new “Another Story” scenario has been added, alongside refreshed UI design and event CGs. Every detail has been carefully polished, making it clear this isn’t just a port—it’s a true “complete edition.”
Another strength of this title is its *perfectly balanced horror*. Instead of relying on cheap jump scares or over-the-top gore, the game builds an atmosphere of eeriness and unease—making it approachable even for horror beginners. Still, the “Creepy” beings roaming the aquarium and the chilling silence at key moments add just enough spice to send shivers down your spine. The puzzles offer a satisfying challenge as well, ensuring that this isn’t just a “run and hide” horror game, but one where thinking and problem-solving are just as important.
If you're interested, we highly recommend giving the game a try.
